Darko about his entry:

“Dunkleosteus hunt – Lord Cudligton, a renowned time traveler and his ever so punctual assistant, mister Stripental have decided to pop to Late Devonian period and nab a prime specimen of Dunkleosteus to be presented at British Natural History museum in London.

As a kid, I had a book with prehistoric creatures. I remember a picture of a massive armored fish pictured next to a dump truck for size comparison. That fish was of course a Dunkleosteus. Cool, prehistoric sea monster and crazy steampunkish time travelers seamed appropriate for the time traveling theme.”

Created using 3D Studio Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Fstorm render and Clip Studio Paint.

What our jury says:

Chris Plush: Just an amazing piece of art perfectly executed in all aspects. Love the characters, sense of action, story, and attention to detail in every part of the image. Really well done!

Cedric Van der Kelen: superb storytelling, action and love for the characters. It looks like a frame of a movie I definitely would like to watch. Composition, color, and shading are all great! Only comment to add is that the mechanical shark looks a bit too sculpted. Awesome work!

Wybren van Keulen: Great character work and exceptional style. The time travel theme isn’t very strong, but the vibrant image pops out of the screen.

Amina Khan: Character has so much warmth, and expression I can envision the entire story.

Marius Iatan: A fun and good-looking interpretation of the ‘early days time traveler’ concept. Nice characters, too!

Aidy Burrows: This is great on so many levels, the composition, the humor, the modeling, the texturing, the color choices and more! Superb!

Julien Kaspar: I love the characters on this artwork. Clearly lots of effort went into their execution.

Lukas Walzer: I am absolutely in love with the bold composition and the harmonious colors in this piece. Both overall shapes and tiny details are top-notch here. Plus it delivers a fun and exciting story! Awesome work!

Joseph Nickson: Beautiful treatment and composition – Absolutely love the character design and hints of storytelling, huge respect from me.

Zacharias Reinhardt: The character work in this one is outstanding, great design and technical execution. I love the details, especially on the hero character. Beside that, great composition and storytelling.

Alyssa about her entry:

“I wanted to travel back in time to being a child, and so I created a scene inspired by childhood. In this scene, a child is playing in a makeshift time-travel machine, and likely traveling back to the time of dinosaurs. It’s an imagination-heavy scene, and so I wanted my lighting and color scheme to reflect its wonder and lightheartedness. I hope that this scene takes you back in time to your childhood!“

Created using Maya, Arnold, Photoshop and Substance Painter.

What our jury says:

Chris Plush: I love the interpretation here, and it’s really well-made in all regards, especially the lighting and color scheme. And as a new father myself, it had me thinking ahead to the fun times I’ll have building stuff out of cardboard with my daughter.

Cedric Van der Kelen: Very nice! It tells a story and is consistent throughout the piece. The added elements all support the idea of somebody who really likes dinosaurs. Well thought trough and executed in a clear way. Only comment is even though everything hints at the moon shining through the window, the window is glowing white, and I’m not sure why.

Gregory Smith: The great storytelling in this submission really sells the image – excellent too in choice of color and set-dressing, the result is a very strong entry.

Amina Khan: Exquisite ambiance, with fantastic attention to detail.

Joseph Nickson: The heart of this piece is what stands out to me most – Keeping things simple and stripped back, the disney-esque lighting and stylized treatment of the piece give a lovely and warming glimpse into a more joyful representation of the time travel topic.

Aidy Burrows: Great interpretation of the theme on this one. Really like the detailing on the main time travel ‘machine’ with the use of cardboard, tin foil and tape. The bedroom works pretty well on this too. I liked the inclusions of dinosaur related cushions and toys, as an aside it probably could have also worked if pushed even further like a dinosaur themed lampshade and perhaps even more dinosaur toys. 🙂

Julien Kaspar: The lighting, use of color & charm is what really makes this artwork for me!

Zacharias Reinhardt: Lovely rendering! I really like the storytelling part and atmosphere in this one. I can imagine sitting in there as a kid and travel to the dinosaur age. Also, on the technical side, this image is top-notch. Love how the “machine” is stuck together with the tape and tinfoil.

3rd Place

Mehdi Cherifi

We’re congratulating Mehdi Cherifi for winning the thrid place!

Mehdi about his entry:

“The story behind this piece is simple: A futuristic samurai seeking revenge on the tokugawa clan through multiple assassinations in our timeline.

So I worked on a character that has that cyberpunk vibes with an urban outfit, then I added a kind of sci-fi helmet and two weapons a sword and a rifle, his name is “kira“ which means “a killer” in japanese & that’s it. Thank you very much for the opportunity and good luck everyone.“

Created using 3D Studio Max, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Daz Studio, VRay, Lightroom and Procreate.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Gregory Smith: Fabulous attention to detail, subtly but effectively conveying the theme of this challenge. Combined with narrative, technical strength and striking composition, it’s a winning entry for me.

Chris Plush: Fantastic character design, very, very cool and well accessorized. This would work perfectly as a cover for a movie or a comic. Even the smallest details seem to be given a lot of attention in this.

Cedric Van der Kelen: great character design and execution. The piece feels believable and consistent with its style. To be careful about making your floor too noisy or undetailed, since in this piece it is a tad distracting. The added hologram and decal elements are all designed very nicely. Well done!

Marius Iatan: Well-done ‘time vigilante’ character and a well-thought scene setup. Nice touch with the motivational quote on the sword 😉

Julien Kaspar: Even though the artwork is a bit heavy on the noise, the character itself, the pose and overall look is very well done!

Lukas Walzer: A magnificently done Cyberpunk take on the topic with a flawless character presented in a very effective way. A good sense of balancing shapes helps the image to create a very realistic yet stylized atmosphere.

Zacharias Reinhardt: The character design and technical execution is very strong in this one. The character design with all the details, especially the clothing, is top-notch. Great pose and fitting lighting.

Jakub about his entry:

“While working on this project I was using Blender like 96% of the time. I was trying to achieve a not very obvious look to present the “time travel” topic. Finally, I decided to go with the idea where an ancient architecture meets futuristic technology. Thanks to this piece, I totally improved my skills of both: the proportions and scale. For statue’s wings shapes I used Gravity Sketch VR. Happy to be a participant again!”

Created using Blender, Gravity Sketch VR and Photoshop.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Gregory Smith: You’re stuck instantly by the sense of scale here – this is time travel taken to an industrial level. The whole design is intriguing and draws you in.

Wybren van Keulen: Jakub strikes again with one of his epic Hollywood film sets. There’s just so much to see in this scene, but the more you look the more you don’t have a clue what’s going on – yet you want to find out more… nice! Clever composition tricks like the cloud shadows and the meandering cables both keep my eyes wandering around. Top notch!

Cedric Van der Kelen: Great piece. The detail is very strong and nicely executed. There is a lot to look at and explore. Though try and keep your lighting a bit more soft in these complex pieces and your colors balanced. Some parts are blown out and hide the detail on your main object. Some parts could look nicer with some more lighting where they are now omitted in shadow. Nice work nonetheless!

Marius Iatan: A giant scale, very rich scene with lots of details. Whether it’s placed in another time or in a different space, it’s very good work 🙂

Lukas Walzer: Now that is a monumental piece! Modular thinking and a good feeling for proportions make this image work on this massive scale. Lighting and colors additionally support the very cinematic look.

Joseph Nickson: Amazingly well constructed piece of world-building – The tasteful interplay of modern and historical elements sit nicely together without being overly forced upon the viewer.

Zacharias Reinhardt: You can really feel the huge size of the statue and the machine. This image has a great lighting and composition besides an incredible amount of details. Love the mixture of future technology and ancient civilization.

Peter Jessiman

Peter about his entry:

“I began my submission this contest when there were 14 days remaining, so the project took two weeks I was at a loss as to what to create/learn/do and I remembered this challenge exists and I haven’t really entered one before, so I’d give it a go. It was a struggle as I have worked my day job every day bar three of those days so managing my time well was imperative. My main goals were to improve a few areas that I had been neglecting: Sculpting, retopo, camera work and EEVEE.

Early on I didn’t really have an idea of where I wanted the camera to sit and wasted a fair amount of time creating textures in painter that wouldn’t really be visible in the final scene. I have been watching the Netflix series “Mindhunter” and I got inspired from that and decided I wanted to do a detective-y, noir-esque scene. I wanted story elements and needed to keep it simple so the four elements are the main interface, the suitcase time machine the “looming” figure and the cork board.

I tried to use contrasts throughout from the contrast of the jokey business card and the rest of the scene, to the colors in the lighting and rim lighting, and the over-saturation vs the washed tones, I feel like I achieved this contrast well. Keeping with the theme I wanted it to feel “out of time” and tried to keep a fantastical almost comic book vibe to the scene.

All in all, I feel I managed my time well and given that I could only work a couple of hours each night on it I am very happy with the result. I wish I had had more time to focus on getting the lighting to work better in EEVEE.

Ultimately I’m happy with this, I hope you like it.”

Created using Blender (EEVEE), Substance Painter, Substance Alchemist, Photoshop and Lightroom.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Cedric Van der Kelen: very nice piece, it tells a story and all the elements support that story! Do try and keep shading and detail consistent throughout your piece (all elements should have same fidelity of detail in both modeling and shading). Nice color usage and compositing. Nice work!

Julien Kaspar: The lighting, details & story are what kept me looking closer and closer.
