1st Place

Eugenio Garcia

We’re congratulating Eugenio Garcia for winning the first place!

Eugenio about his entry:

“My story is about one of the Santa Reindeers, chilling and relaxing after a busy working day. He is maybe a little angry, but he’ll be okay eventually because he is having beer and watching TV.”

Created using Lightwave3D, Quixel Mixer, Octane Render, Substance Painter and Photoshop.

What our jury says:

Aidy Burrows: “Really captured a nice Christmas-y feel in this image. Lots of details throughout the image for the eye to enjoy. Nice lighting and composition. Interesting fusion of ideas with the themes, toys, North star mirror, fabrics, Christmas TV and so on. Lot’s of imaginative ideas throughout.”

Chris Plush: “I don’t think Rudolph’s going to be in any condition to guide the sleigh this season. Really awesome scene, plenty of detail to look over, and everything is well made in all aspects.”

Amina Khan: “Impressed by how the theme has been carried in the entire piece, with so many surfaces to work on, it’s a commendable feat.”

Serhii Antropov: “Nice knitted style of a character and a scene mood. Would be better to see a lot of cocoa mags here instead of beer bottles. But overall it’s a great work.”

Ken Liang: “The amount of details in this artwork makes up for what it lacks in story. The overall vibrancy of the image creates a rather messy composition, i feel. It’s hard to pinpoint where the focal point is. Aside from that, other technical aspects are on point – textures, materials, and models all look great.”

Lukas Walzer: “Wow, what a christmassy image! Every tiny detail is intricately modelled and textured and the stylistic continuity and technical quality are so perfect they could fit right into an amazing (but maybe a bit bizarre) short movie!”

2nd Place

Andrey Agafonov

We’re congratulating Andrey Agafonov for winning the second place!

Andrey about his entry:

“How Christmas was saved – Santa has decided to go on vacation for once this Christmas. Luckily Rudolph was there in time to change his mind, save Christmas, and puzzle some occasional pilots along the way.

I focused on sculpting and hair simulation for this entry. I learned a lot about anatomy for character sculpting and had tons of fun in Blender’s particle edit mode.”

Created using Blender 2.81 (Cycles) and Krita.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Aidy Burrows: “Fun use of the theme here, simple but effective style used to tell a good comedic moment in a visual story well told.”

Serhii Antropov: “I love the story, render style and details like sign with a bag and a tattoo on the Santas hand.”

Darko Vucenik: “This image won me over with its humor. I love the idea of Santa running late, returning from his vacation. Style of the characters is very appropriate, with Santa giving a bit of an old biker vibe with his shoulder tattoo and reindeer with panicked expression on his face. Lighting is great and textures are simple in style but very effective. My main criticism would be the somewhat awkward positioning of reindeer’s leg, holding the watch and some unrefined shaping of the thumb on Santa’s hand. Great image.”

Christoph Werner: “Another image with a funny story and the use of well acting characters. I love well placed details like the text in the small sign, above the window…”

Ken Liang: “Oh this is a fun one! Santa only had to work one day a year, and still he needs his trusty reindeer to remind him of his duty. Great quirky rendition of Santa on holiday. Nice lighting overall but still could be improved to further bring out the form of Santa, his arm kinda blends into the background a little bit there.”

3rd Place

Mycro TR CT

We’re congratulating Mycro TR CT for winning the thrid place!

Mycro about his entry:

“He comes from the mountain and is a rocker reindeer singing some Christmas songs in the streets no asking for money but yes some people just drop coins good to buy some beer.”

Created using Blender, Quixel Mixer and Photoshop.

What our jury says:

Gregory Smith: “For me, this is a very strong entry. It meets the topic in a new way, and provides a powerful narrative, all backed up by its colouring and composition.”

Chris Plush: “This is a fun scene and a very unique character design. Great creativity, modeling, texturing, and lighting.”

Ken Liang: “This artwork immediately catches my attention the first time I looked at it. The stylized character and simplicity of the scene is enhanced with a superb warm+cold tone lighting. Another great example of why less is more. Very charming and nice to look at!”

Lukas Walzer: “What a goofy character design, I love it! The clean modeling and simple shapes really help bringing this reindeer to life and make it look almost like a 2D illustration when looking at the silhouette.”

Honorable Mention

Saroj Koirala

We’re congratulating Saroj Koirala for receiving an honorable mention!

Saroj about the entry:

“This is my first submission in any challenges, kind of excited for this. It’s been 1 year since I dived into 3d world. I took this concept from birch-wood reindeer which was posted on Pinterest.”

Created using Blender 2.81 and Adobe Lightroom.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Aidy Burrows: “Simple image but nothing complicated required to get the feeling across as it does this so very effectively. On atechnical level, the composition, camera focus, lightingand materials are all very well done. A great example ofhow a great image doesn’t necessarily require supercomplicated modeling and lighting setups. Creative use of the theme too!”

Christoph Werner: “As I’m a photographer I like the high realism in this picture. Today a lot of cg images comes with clean and perfect renderings, the use of noise makes this picture unique.”

Darko Vucenik: “The design of the characters is very cute and reminds me of decorations that I would often see at Christmas street fair stands when I was a child. I love the lighting with that soft, overcast day feel to it. Depth of field is used so well to really focus the attention to figurines. I would like to see a bit less grain in the image.”

Lukas Walzer: “I always love especially the images that dare to go with a more quiet topic and actually succeed in doing so, and this is one of them! There’s a lovely vintage quality and simplicity to it that really warms my heart!”

Honorable Mention

Micha Twardy

We’re congratulating Micha Twardy for receiving an honorable mention!

Micha about his entry:

“The endless journey – Through a documentary I watched about Norway and the Hurtigruten I got the idea for my submission. It is a simple scene showing reindeers in their natural environment. A large group of reindeers moving through the landscape in search of new pastures.

The scene was created with 3ds Max, textured with Photoshop and Substance Painter and finally rendered with V-Ray. I added a few changes via Photoshop as a final touch.”

Created using 3ds Max, Photoshop, Substance Painter and V-Ray.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Gregory Smith: “Great lighting and colour choices made this one stand out for me; you really feel swept up with the herd. I want to see where they’re all going to :)”

Chris Plush: “This is a beautiful nature scene. It’s very realistic and captures the atmosphere of the moment perfectly, especially with the lighting and attention to detail like their breath. Great work!”

Aidy Burrows: “Not too many captured the essence of the reindeer as wellas this image and to push it as far as this has soeffectively towards photo-realism, while being economicalwith the details in the scene. A great accomplishment ona lot of levels with this image.”

Lukas Walzer: “Very nice play with atmospheric light and haze effects. Together with some solid photoreal modeling and realistic DOF they help creating an image that could be right out of a wildlife magazine.”
