Overview

Life After Humans Challenge winners announced!

For our 16th challenge, we received 155 submissions, and we saw many creative scenarios what could happen after mankind is gone.

Our jury had a good but also hard time judging all the great accepted submissions. Each judge voted for their own top 5 artworks. We also picked three random winners for the challenge raffle, see all the winners below.

Regrading the prizes, we will contact the winners during the next few days.

Congrats to the winners and honorable mentions, and a big THANK YOU to our sponsor and everyone for taking part!

Eugenio about his entry:

“My entry is about, the future of a hamburger without humans, how it became a source of life for different living things for a long time.“

Created using Lightwave3d, Quixel Mixer, Octane Render, Marvelous Designer 9, Substance Painter and Photoshop.

What our jury says:

Zacharias Reinhardt: “This is a great render in many aspects. First, the storytelling is fitting the topic nicely, something unhealthy made by humans is now serving other species to live.  Technical wise I like all the great details which help to focus the attention to the burger. The lighting fits the “humans are gone” mood and the composition is spot on.”

Chris Plush: “I like the mystery surrounding this one, because you can’t tell how long it’s been abandoned since that stuff takes forever to decay. I love the extra details as well, like the glowing mushrooms.”

Gregory Smith: “I really like the narrative and idea in this entry. It hits the topic perfectly with great subtlety in the lighting.”

Ken Liang: “I don’t know where to begin. There’s so many things that I like about this artwork! The amount of details is tremendous! Despite being so jam packed with details, the focus is still very well directed at the survivors of the apocalypse – the processed food. A great idea that is well-supported by equally great composition and lighting.”

Wybren van Keulen: “Fast food burgers are indeed one of the last things to decay ; ) I love the glowing mushrooms.”

2nd Place

David Aguero

David about his entry:

“I was very attracted to the subject of this challenge, the idea came up almost instantly, learned some stuff about using data from World Creator to Lightwave, it was a great exercise to continuing to develop my skills”

Created using Lightwave 3D, World Creator and Affinity Photo.

What our jury says:

Aidy Burrows: “Has the feel of a new dawn, a peaceful interpretation on the theme, once humans are gone things seem to go a lot better for everything else! Nice colors, and nice use of the dolphins drawing attention down the center. Really liked the rhythm and placement of all the foliage, nicely done! :)”

Chris Plush: “Beautiful painted feel, and the whole style and atmosphere captures the serenity of the topic perfectly.”

Wybren van Keulen: “A strong concept and well executed. The whales are a great idea to depict nature reclaiming the world.”

Darko Vucenik: “Wonderful scene. I love the rich nature with such vivid colors emphasized with nice back-lighting. There is so much detail to see in this image. From nature reclaimed architecture to mother and child whale, everything looks so good.”

Ken Liang: “Awesome, epic and grand scale landscape scene that hits the mark on every aspect of the challenge. Really like the color palette of saturated blue and green, coupled with the warm sunshine, I think it really helps sell the idea that mother earth is back and alive. The animals are also a nice touch to add life into the artwork.”

Marius Iatan: “A good scene concept with a game-like look. It’s good work, and I’d like to see an evolution based on the same concept, with a bit more focus on details”

3rd Place

Lukas Langemeyer

We’re congratulating Lukas Langemeyer for receiving the third place!

Lukas about the entry:

“Thinking about live after humans, I think about peace, nature, freedom, … and I wanted to show that. I really tried to convey in a sense of hope. That not everything is lost after humanity.

I really enjoyed working towards a deadline. It took me 2 weeks to finish this project and I really hope you like it!“

Created using Blender 2.83.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Lukas Walzer: “A very romantic and charming image, lighting and foliage do successfully create an almost fairy-tale-like vision of the future.”

Marius Iatan: “A well-done interpretation of the classical post-apocalyptic scene: the city taken over by vegetation viewed in the sunset. Good level of detail, good lighting as well. Nice touch with Big Ben turned into a big nest.”

Wybren van Keulen: “King of the world! I love the moody ambience. The restoration of the Big Ben has also been finished beautifully!”

Chipp Walters: “What better iconic depiction of an apocalypse than a retrograded Big Ben facing the evening with a giant bird nesting at it’s center. This strong concept is backed by a wonderful execution in lighting and environment.”

Darko Vucenik: “Big Ben became a cuckoo clock when humanity fell. Covered in vines, this famous landmark look so cool. Excellent use of aerial perspective.”

What our jury says:

Zacharias Reinhardt: “One can clearly see that the artist was giving special attention to create a great composition, which he did very well. The lines and curves are leading the viewers eyes to the point of interest in this render. I like the feel of the last humans tried to escape earth with a spaceship and failed. Great work on the ship design and details.”

Lukas Walzer: “A well executed elongated Golden Spiral here, but that’s not all that makes this image stand out: Strong design shapes, great textures and atmospheric lighting make this piece very pleasing to the eye and create a cinematic mood.”

Gregory Smith: “This entry is certainly cinematic, the high contrast and strong lighting making it an eye-catching image. The shape and detail composition, along with the overall framing, are very well worked out.”

Andrew Probert: “I loved this because it says life continues after a life we haven’t gotten to, yet… developing these craft – but still dying out. Plus, I simply love the Design of this ship.”

Honorable Mention

Sergey Belyaev

We’re congratulating Sergey Belyaev for receiving an honorable mention!

Sergey about his entry:

“Idea:Main idea was to make something different from overgrown landscape or building. So I thought how it could be if we destroyed our precious atmosphere and the weather became very hot and dry. To express it, I thought of a lighthouse that is broken and rusty and is not overlooking the sea anymore but the desert with broken ships and boats in it.

Story:After humanity destroyed Earth’s precious atmosphere, the fresh blue oceans transformed into deserts. Most of the trees, grass and vegetation died. The soil changed too. It became so dry that it is impossible to cultivate. Animals and humans were not able to handle the temperatures and this dry and hot air and died.Only some tough vegetation has remained there, adapted and transformed from fresh green leaves to dry hay.Eventually all humans and most of the animals became extinct. The only remnants of our civilization are our buildings and machinery standing there in dry and very hot silence. We have such a beautiful planet, let’s not destroy it and become extinct…

What have I learned along the way:I learned a lot about the modelling with Blender and texturing stuff. Moving from different 3D software it was interesting to see how I could create it in Blender. Especially making procedural textures for dunes and then transforming them into the mesh, as well as procedural displacement to imitate decayed lighthouse.I learned a lot about post-processing. I wanted to bring the effect of hot and dry day. With some subtle particles of sand in the background and heat distortion in the air that you can see near the horizon. Chromatic aberration and different curves colour grading all this small changes helped me to express the idea I had in my mind.

How long did it take to complete:I started the challenge on June 5th. Firstly by thinking about the story and idea behind the project and then sketching and trying different composition on paper. I decided to go with golden triangle composition instead of the thirds to show how the ocean transformed into the desert. And to show how abandoned and empty the world has become. Then using PureRef (absolutely wonderful software! Big kudos to the creators of it) and looking for some real footage to get inspiration and to see how I should model the lighthouse and the environment.

I tried to learn about procedural texturing by following tutorials and see how I could create sand dunes. The project was finished on June 17th.”

Created using Blender, Photoshop and PureRef.

Clay Render

What our jury says:

Zacharias Reinhardt: “I like the fresh view on the topic, instead of overgrown cities to have a desert instead, which already gives enough storytelling on its own, when you think about the challenges’ topic. Great execution on the technical part as well. The desert including the heat distortion looks convincing and the lighthouse is a great detail and feels nicely weird on the edge of a desert.”

Lukas Walzer: “I really like the very limited yet balanced and well distributed color palette of this image. Sky and ground colors alone are here sufficient for really selling this image as realistic and believable.”

Chris Plush: “Amazing landscape, and especially good job with the texturing.”

Wybren van Keulen: “I think this is a very strong image! The wavy sand is beautifully executed and the air ripples make me feel the heat. Wow!”

Darko Vucenik: “I like the serenity of the dried up ocean bed in this image. This desolate place is so well done and nice to look at despite the grim tale skeletons tell.”
